L'engawa est une bande de plancher séparant l'intérieur qui s'arrête aux shoji, de l'extérieur que représente le jardin, une sorte de plateforme intermédiaire entre les deux. 

Apparenté à un couloir extérieur abrité, il pouvait autrefois desservir plusieurs pièces, avec deux dénominations, nure-en (濡縁?) étant ouvert sur l'extérieur  et kure-en (榑縁?) fermé par des shoji ou des volets.

The engawa is a strip of flooring separating the interior, which ends at the shoji screens, from the exterior, represented by the garden—a kind of intermediate platform between the two. 

Similar to a sheltered exterior corridor, it could once provide access to several rooms, and was known by two names: nure-en (濡縁), open to the outside, and kure-en (榑縁), enclosed by shoji screens or shutters.
